It's official: Printers say "no" to printing Filament with erections

This is their reason:

"Further to [...] the submission of some advance images, I can now herein formally confirm that we would NOT want to print material of this nature, which although likely to perhaps only cause offence to a small number of actual staff, may unfortunately create much bigger and more serious far reaching problems for us with other clients - particularly those in the womens/religious sectors, who could potentially withdraw their own work in protest as a result."

It tickled me merrily that they are concerned about offending the women's sector!

Is this a problem? Can't we just get another printer?

Well, possibly not. This printer is about 30% cheaper than any other quote I've had, and print is our major cost, so using someone else would be seriously difficult.

Something to contemplate, anyway.

Find a bunch of printers that are ok with printing women's bits and take it from there?

(does the printer have to be UK based?)

There are conceivably plenty of printers who would do erections. The issue is that this one is 30% cheaper than every other printer I've spoken to, and the entire cost/profit/loss strategy of Filament is based on the reasonable print price they were able to offer.

Currently, yes.

But in future when our print volumes are a bit higher and I've got a clearer idea of where they're all going, I'm going to look into getting them printed in small runs in our major markets (I would suspect New Zealand and the US) and posted out from there, as it may be cheaper!
That is very annoying of them - surely they knew what the content was going to be prior to accepting the job. :/

Do they publish Nun's Weekly or something?
They didn't accept the job as such - they printed Filament 1, so I checked with them about some of the content I'm planning for Filament 2, which is how this issue arose. Hehe.

I do find it particularly odd that they think erections might offend "the women's sector"... the homophobic men's sector more like.
Our printers would be happy to give you a quote; no idea if it would be as cheap, but they are always helpful to me and suggest alternatives if they can't meet my requirements. Try Mike Edmonds at Azimuth, who knows me as Catherine, and who says they would have no issues with "this sort of material".
Thanks Catherine. I shall send them a message!
The women's sector is more than a little boggling. The religious sector not so much, being as they seem largely to hate the very idea that people shouldn't be ashamed of sex, their bodies, etc.

*sighs* I suppose we can live without erections. *grumple*
Stuff like this just makes me stabby.
The religious stuff offends me.

Surely

this has "web exclusive" written all over it. Perhaps have a password protected web area on the site for subscribers (print or web-only) - you can also get some of the more open-minded businesses to advertise around it...

Re: Surely

This is a very good idea. And definitely something I'd look into as soon as we've got our "web development issue" sorted!
